Groove Fashion Show, 2007

Come out to the Charity Association’s Fourth Annual Groove Fashion Show on January, 25 to view CSRS’ Aveda segment!  This year’s event will support the Yellow Brick House, a charity that offers shelter, counseling, and education to victims of domestic violence.  CSRS will be showcasing Aveda products, a hair care company known for its green ingredients and social activism.  Join us at this annual fashion show for an exciting evening of dancing and fashion!

Member Appreciation Lunch, March 2008

“Corporate Social Responsibility: More than a new management fashion?” Panel Discussion – June 7, 2007

Presented by the Schulich School of Business, the Goethe-Institut Toronto and the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce, this event addressed the role of corporate social responsibility in a global economy.  CSRS members were among the attendees who enjoyed a presentation and discussion period mediated by Kathrin Bohr, the Vice President of Canadian Business for Social Responsibility.  The panel was comprised of Dirk Matten, the Hewlett-Packard Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility; Kaz Flinn, Scotiabank’s Vice President of Government Affairs and Corporate Social Responsibility; and Aysa September, a research associate at Globescan.  Each speaker shared their past experiences and displayed great enthusiasm for the future of sustainable business practices, proving that CSR is so much more than a new management fashion.


Net Impact Networking – Connecting With Tomorrow’s Leaders – June 6, 2007

This summer, CSRS members were invited to attend Net Impact’s first networking event of the year.  Students from the University of Toronto Rotman Chapter and Toby Heaps, the editor of Corporate Knights, were also in attendance to hear what Net Impact had planned for the upcoming year.  Held in the Sustainability Network’s office in downtown Toronto, it was an exciting opportunity to meet likeminded individuals and discuss the future direction for both the undergraduate and graduate CSR clubs at Schulich.

 

CSRS’ 2007 CORE Conference and Case Competition – February 9th – 10th, 2007

CSRS’ third annual conference brought together likeminded students and corporate representatives for a classy evening of networking and an engaging day packed with seminars, speakers and case presentations.  The conference began with a networking social at the Steam Whistle Brewery, a new component to CSRS’ annual conference on corporate social responsibility. Delegates were greeted with a formal introduction made by Chris Asimakis, the CEO of Enwave Energy Corp. and were then free to eat, drink and network for the remainder of the evening.  Saturday’s events were held at the Schulich School of Business and featured presentations by the case competition finalists and speeches made by Valerie Chort, a partner in Deloitte’s Enterprise Risk Services; Joe Pach, Telus’ Director of Environment and Risk Management; and Alexander Wood, the Acting President and CEO of the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy.  Following lunch in the dining room, delegates participated in workshops held by Jantzi Research, Suncor Energy, Vartana Bank, TerraCycle, Corporate Knights and Ashoka Canada.  The 2007 CORE Conference was an amazing success, a true testament to the strength and growth of CSR.

 

Eco-Action Team Meeting and the Sustainable Shopper – September 25, 2007

This event was the first installment of CSRS’ Eco-Action Team/Sustainable Shopper Meetings.  The first segment of the meeting covered facts and tips on water usage, waste management, and energy.  The second half of the meeting featured products aimed at reducing the consumer’s environmental impact.  Students were encouraged to participate, sharing their own advice and experience with sustainable products.  To learn more about how you can change your consumption habits, keep an eye out for our next meeting!

 

“Branching Out: Bettering the Individual in Today’s Greener Society” Speaker Panel – September 26, 2007

Hosted by Calumet College and CSRS, this event was held to broaden the student perspective on the economic, environmental, and social effects of our decisions.  The speaker panel was comprised of Darryl Reed, an Associate Professor in the Division of Social Science at York who holds a PhD in political economy and public policy, and a PhD in social ethics; and Marija Minic, the York Centre riding candidate for the Green Party of Ontario.  The panel also featured a York student, Imran Kaderdina, who is a member of the Sustainable Purchasing Coalition, a facilitator of the No Sweat working group, and a co-faciliatator of the Green Purchasing workshop.  The panel discussed their work and experiences with bettering the community, and networked with students following the discussion.  Despite their different backgrounds and areas of concentration, each of the speakers emphasized the importance of making informed decisions with your vote and your dollar.

 

Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanche – September 29, 2007

CSRS members spent a Saturday evening exploring downtown Toronto as part of Scotiabank’s Nuit Blanche.  The contemporary art event featured artists and their work throughout three different districts.  Unlike the usual all-nighter we Schulichers are used to, this one was filled with culture and fun!

 

CIBC Run for the Cure – September 30, 2007

This year CSRS joined up with the Schulich Charity Association to help raise awareness and funds for the fight against breast cancer.  Dressed in our “Team Schulich” shirts and waving our “Team Schulich” banner, we walked and ran alongside hundreds of other participants in support of a cure for breast cancer.  This morning event was packed with energy and the colour pink!


Movie Night: Super Size Me – October 2, 2007

CSRS members enjoyed an Academy Award nominated documentary during the club’s screening of Super Size Me.  Directed by Morgan Spurlock, this film follows Spurlock on his McDonald’s diet and illustrates the fast food industry’s promotion of unhealthy eating for profit – a prime example of shareholder over stakeholder interests!

 

The Recycled Eco-Fashion Show – October 4, 2007

As part of York’s Green Week, CSRS and FAY members strutted their stuff in the Recycled Eco-Fashion Show.  This event featured environmentally friendly clothing made by local designers and transformed the Student Center into a very green catwalk!  Everything from clothing made of bamboo to re-tailored vintage outfits were on show.  Designers also had their clothing up for sale, giving students the chance to benefit the environment AND look good!


The Triple Tour – October 19, 2007

Participants of the Triple Tour visited three of Toronto’s sustainable buildings - the Tridel Eco-Suite, the Center for Social Innovation, and Mountain Equipment Co-op!  Guided by a representative from each of the three, these tours demonstrated how green business practices can be applied to all aspects of operations - including the paint on the walls!


Habitat for Humanity CSRS Council Build – Aug 11, 2006

This summer many executive members of CSRS had an amazing experience volunteering a day to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity in Toronto. We painted, used power tools, laid floors and framed doors. The opportunity was rewarding loads of fun, and brought the team together to help contribute towards our local community in a great and exciting way.We hope to have another experience building for H4H with our members this year!


Fashion Launch Party for Auj Collections – July 2006

Auj Collections is a fashion business led by brothers and social entrepreneurs Dev and Aaron Aujla. CSRS’ 2006 “Walk the Talk” Best CSR Practices Case Competition and Conference – February 24, 2006

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is fundamental to corporate success and business leadership in all industries and sectors. At the conference, delegates listened to speeches by representatives from RBC, KPMG and Suncor Energy Inc. on how CSR is fundamental to their business models and corporate strategies. Our keynote speaker, Michael Jantzi, President and Founder of Jantzi Research Inc., is one of Canada's leading spokespersons on social investment and CSR issues, appearing regularly in the national media (www.jantziresearch.com).

Delegates also had the opportunity to dine and network with reputable business professionals from CIBC Mellon, Procter and Gamble, Magna International, Shiseido, Corporate Knights and Methanax, who incorporate CSR into their daily activities within their respective fields of business.


Net Impact/CSRS BBQ – September 21, 2006

It is a yummy way to kick off the year and for our members to network and meet potential MBA mentors from the ever-popular Net Impact. Networking with people who both care about making business better and who have similar business interests is being made easy, and the event promises to be a lot of fun.


“On the Rocks” Social Rock Climb/Meet and Greet – September 28, 2006

Instructor included, all welcome! CSRS will host an exciting meet and greet where members and council can get to know each other and more of what CSRS is all about. You will also get to meet some members from Net Impact, Schulich’s MBA club focused on business sustainability.


CSRS Open Meeting – October 5, 2006

This will be our official introduction to CSRS, what we are all about, what we set out to do, why you will benefit from membership, and why we value your participation.We will also match members with council members to form more interactive and personal groups within CSRS for the year. We will also give out food and refreshments and play some games. It is all about getting to know you.


Screening of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” with Net Impact – October 5, 2006

Net Impact and CSRS are co-hosting two screenings of Al Gore's widely popular, eye-opening film about the impacts of Global Warming and the urgency required by business to change the way they operate.

High School Workshops Project - December 2006-February 2007

This year, CSRS executives and members will be going out to the community to teach high school students about CSR. The project will involve the preparation of the workshop, acting as a liaison between CSRS and high schools and leading workshops in business classes during Reading Week. Students can get involved with any of the elements, and all promise to be a fantastic experience of community involvement as well as skill development.
